Biorepository Manager Research Role at Stanford Health Center

The Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University is seeking a talented and dedicated Biorepository Manager to join their innovative research team. This position, formally classified as a Life Science Research Professional II, will play a crucial role in conducting translational research on pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and celiac disease at the Stanford Medicine Children’s Health Center.

The Stanford Medicine Children’s Health Center for IBD and Celiac Disease is committed to integrating cutting-edge clinical care and research to improve the lives of children affected by these conditions. Through coordinated patient care, research initiatives, and educational activities, the Center aims to make significant advancements in understanding and treating pediatric IBD and celiac disease.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the administration and execution of the IBD and Celiac Disease Biorepository, including developing standard operating procedures
  • Manage biospecimen processing, inventory management, and distribution processes
  • Coordinate with the Clinical and Translational Research Unit, BioBank, and other research cores
  • Make recommendations on biospecimen storage, handling, processing, and experimental design to the Director and Scientific Director
  • Serve as the primary point person for coordinating collaborations with investigators using Biorepository specimens
  • Assess the needs for human biospecimens for collaborating research groups
  • Adapt collection and processing methods to meet individual laboratory requirements
  • Provide de-identified metadata to collaborating laboratories
  • Independently manage samples and conduct experiments (may include RNA sequencing, microscopy, flow cytometry, or CyTOF)
  • Contribute significantly to the scientific and technological direction of the Center
  • Prepare portions of methods and results sections for academic papers
  • Develop tables for clinical metadata associated with human samples
  • Present research findings at academic conferences when opportunities arise
  • Independently conduct complex laboratory experiments to gather data for research projects
  • Interpret and analyze results, often with limited guidelines, and modify existing procedures and protocols as needed
  • Develop new research protocols when appropriate procedures are not described in literature
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools
  • Perform ongoing literature reviews to remain current with new procedures and related research
  • Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Supervise staff or students as needed, providing technical guidance and project consultation
  • Manage daily laboratory activities including maintenance, stock management, chemical inventory, and safety records

Biorepository Research Position Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field and two years of relevant work experience; OR
  • Master’s degree in a related scientific field

Skills and Technical Expertise

  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles
  • Strong computer skills with ability to quickly learn programs, databases, and scientific applications
  • Exceptional analytical skills and excellent judgment
  • Meticulous record-keeping abilities and organizational skills
  • Experience in biological sample preparation for bioanalysis and automation (desired)
  • Strong scientific skills including hypothesis generation, experiment planning, and data analysis (desired)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp, use fine manipulation

  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders
  • Sort and file paperwork or parts
  • Must have correctable vision to perform duties of the job
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds

Working Conditions
