Early Childhood Assistant Role Overview

The Salvation Army is seeking a dedicated Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) to join our team in creating nurturing, safe, and developmentally appropriate learning environments for children. The Early Childhood Assistant position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to The Salvation Army’s 130+ year legacy of serving communities across Canada and Bermuda. Working alongside experienced Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs), you’ll help implement engaging, play-based learning activities that foster children’s spiritual, social, physical, emotional, and cognitive development.

Early Childhood Assistant Responsibilities

The Early Childhood Assistant plays a vital role in our childcare centers. Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Lead RECE in implementing and evaluating age-appropriate programs that promote holistic child development
  • Building meaningful relationships with children through positive interactions and responsive caregiving
  • Using various observation and documentation techniques to record children’s progress
  • Facilitating cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative, and physical development
  • Identifying and expanding upon spontaneous learning opportunities (teachable moments)
  • Supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the learning environment
  • Maintaining health, safety, and welfare standards, including first-aid/CPR when needed
  • Implementing emergency protocols and evacuation plans in collaboration with the RECE
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles and actively supervising children during all activities
  • Supporting children’s nutritional needs and modeling proper mealtime behaviors
  • Implementing positive behavior guidance strategies and promoting conflict resolution skills
  • Maintaining equipment, materials, and ensuring cleanliness of indoor/outdoor environments
  • Building and maintaining meaningful relationships with families
  • Completing required documentation including daily logs and program records

Early Childhood Assistant Qualifications

To excel in this position, successful candidates will need:

  • Minimum 18 years of age (Canada Summer Job requirement: between 18-30 years)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for interacting with children, parents, and staff
  • Clean Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Current medical clearance
  • Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certification
  • Completion of all required Salvation Army online courses
  • Food Handlers Certificate (asset)
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a vehicle (asset)
  • Minimum one year of related experience in childcare settings
  • Knowledge and experience implementing and evaluating educational programs
  • Understanding of child development principles and practices
