Substitute Teaching Opportunity Overview

The Stow-Munroe Falls City School District is actively recruiting dedicated substitute teachers who can maintain classroom continuity and deliver quality instruction when regular teachers are absent. This position reports directly to the Principal and plays a vital role in ensuring that students’ educational journeys remain uninterrupted during their regular teacher’s absence.

Job Description Summary

As a Substitute Teacher, you will implement prepared lesson plans, maintain classroom management, and ensure students continue to receive quality education during their regular teacher’s absence. During extended absences, you may be asked to perform all duties outlined in the absent teacher’s job description.

Key Substitute Teacher Responsibilities

  • Classroom Instruction and Management
    • Execute prepared lesson plans left by the absent teacher
    • Maintain accurate student attendance and absence records
    • Implement effective classroom management techniques
    • Create and sustain a positive learning environment
    • Support students with disabilities in appropriate learning activities
  • Professional Communication
    • Provide a written summary of completed work for the returning teacher
    • Alert the regular teacher to any special situations or problems encountered
    • Consult with the principal and/or staff to resolve questions or concerns
    • Communicate effectively with parents about academic objectives and expectations
    • Collaborate with other staff members to ensure educational continuity
  • Administrative Duties
    • Maintain accurate records and submit reports within deadlines
    • Follow school emergency procedures (weather, lockdown, etc.)
    • Comply with building work schedules and hours
    • Uphold board policies and follow administrative guidelines
    • Supervise non-classroom activities when assigned
  • Safety and Compliance
    • Report suspected child abuse and/or neglect as required by law
    • Monitor situations that may indicate a problem
    • Provide appropriate student supervision at all times
    • Work with supervisors to manage or eliminate risk factors
    • Promote proper use, care, and security of school property

Qualifications for Substitute Teaching

Required Qualifications

  • Compliance with state department of education temporary teaching license requirements
  • Completion of all mandated health requirements (e.g., negative tuberculosis test)
  • Clean record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment
  • Compliance with drug-free workplace rules and board policies

Preferred Qualifications

  • State department of education license/certificate appropriate for the position
  • Previous teaching or classroom experience
  • Familiarity with current educational technology and classroom innovations
