Job Description Summary

The University of Sussex is seeking a Research Fellow to work on cutting-edge Experimental Quantum Technology, focusing on creating a distributed quantum network by combining trapped ions and photons through an efficient ion-photon interface based on strongly-coupled cavity-QED.

Responsibilities

  • Test and characterize a multi-zone ion trap system incorporating zones for loading, quantum information processing, and a cavity-based ion-photon interface
  • Set up and test the system and implement novel schemes for ion-photon entanglement
  • Establish a second system to implement a basic quantum network upon successful testing
  • Work with complex optical systems with diode lasers, ultra-high vacuum systems, and control electronics

🧪 Detailed Project Description

The University of Sussex’s School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is at the forefront of quantum computing research, where breakthrough innovations are continuously being developed. This Research Fellow position offers a unique opportunity to join Dr. Matthias Keller’s team of experienced researchers who are pioneering new methods in quantum information processing.

The Quantum Network Challenge

This 24-month postdoctoral position (with possible extension) is part of the prestigious EPSRC Quantum Technology Hub: Quantum Computing via Integrated and Interconnected Implementations. The project’s ambitious goal is to bridge two highly successful techniques in quantum information processing—trapped ions and photons—to create robust and scalable distributed quantum networks.

The primary research challenge lies in developing an exceptionally efficient ion-photon interface using advanced strongly-coupled cavity-QED techniques. The team has already developed an innovative multi-zone ion trap with specialized zones for: – Ion loading – Quantum information processing – Cavity-based ion-photon interfacing

As a Research Fellow, you’ll lead efforts to test and characterize this sophisticated ion trap system while implementing highly efficient ion-photon interfaces. Your work will involve both practical setup and testing of the physical system as well as theoretical work simulating and implementing novel schemes for ion-photon entanglement.

Following successful testing of the primary multi-zone trap, you’ll help establish a second system designed to implement a functional basic quantum network—a significant step toward scalable quantum computing architectures.

Essential Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have completed a PhD in experimental quantum information, laser physics, or atomic physics with demonstrated practical experience in the field. Given the complexity of the experimental apparatus, you should possess:

  • Strong understanding of complex optical systems
  • Experience with diode lasers and their applications
  • Knowledge of ultra-high vacuum systems
  • Familiarity with control electronics for quantum experiments

While not strictly required, the following skills would be highly beneficial for success in this role: – Programming experience for experimental control – Data analysis expertise – Experience with cavity-QED systems – Background in quantum networking protocols
