Job Description Summary

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for overseeing the Sustainable Energy Materials Group (SEMG) laboratories at Imperial College London, managing equipment, safety protocols, staff training, and laboratory operations for cutting-edge sustainable energy materials research.

Laboratory Manager Responsibilities and Qualifications

🧪 Responsibilities

  • Laboratory Equipment Management: Take full responsibility for the maintenance of equipment in the SEMG laboratories, coordinating with senior team members for procurement and installation of new equipment as required.

  • Safety Oversight: Ensure all Health and Safety regulations and procedures are strictly followed within all SEMG laboratory spaces, developing and implementing appropriate safety protocols and risk assessments.

  • Training and Supervision: Train all laboratory users appropriately before they undertake any activities, ensuring they understand and follow standard operating procedures and safety guidelines.

  • Resource Management: Set up and maintain online resources including booking systems, laboratory protocols, and data management systems to ensure efficient laboratory operations.

  • Budget Administration: Manage a dedicated budget for procuring consumables and small equipment, making strategic decisions to optimize laboratory resources.

  • Technical Support: Assist with simple test rig build, procurement, and operation activities to support research projects within the department.

  • Interdepartmental Collaboration: Support wider safety and equipment maintenance issues across the Department of Chemical Engineering as requested by line management.

  • Professional Development: Keep up-to-date with the latest developments in instrumentation, analytical protocols, and safety standards by attending relevant workshops and conferences.

  • Facility Coordination: Liaise with University facilities teams and equipment servicing engineers to ensure all maintenance activities are performed as required.

  • Laboratory Access Management: Oversee laboratory access protocols and ensure all users comply with established procedures.

🔍 Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Chemistry, Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Demonstrable experience working with electrochemistry equipment, particularly glove boxes, including maintenance and regeneration techniques.

  • Proven experience in chemical research laboratory settings, operating and maintaining relevant instruments.

  • Experience performing chemical synthesis of materials and electrochemistry procedures.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of chemical laboratory safety protocols and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations.

  • Advanced computer skills for managing laboratory systems and data.

  • Strong technical problem-solving abilities for troubleshooting equipment issues.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective training and collaboration.

  • Organizational prowess to manage multiple laboratory spaces and equipment simultaneously.

  • Attention to detail, particularly regarding safety protocols and maintenance schedules.
