Clinical Academic Training Leadership Role Overview

This exciting leadership opportunity places you at the heart of Imperial College’s prestigious Clinical Academic Training Office (CATO). As Head of CATO Programmes, you will play a pivotal role in developing the next generation of clinical academics across Imperial College and its partner institutions. 🔍 About the Clinical Academic Training Office

The Clinical Academic Training Office (CATO) serves as a centralized pan-professional academic training hub under the leadership of Professor Jeremy Levy. CATO provides essential support and guidance for clinicians at various stages of their academic journey, including those planning or undertaking PhDs, those in lectureships, and all NIHR-funded integrated academic trainees. Additionally, CATO supports nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, pharmacists, and psychologists (NMAHPPPs) who are developing academic or research careers, from pre-doctoral to advanced fellows.

CATO functions as the training arm of the Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and is an integral part of the Imperial College Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) – a strategic partnership between Imperial College London, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, and the Institute of Cancer Research.

Healthcare Leadership Responsibilities

As the Head of CATO Programmes at Imperial College, you will:

  • Strategic Development: Oversee and manage the strategic development, delivery, and implementation of clinical academic training activities across the AHSC partnership
  • Operational Management: Manage the operational delivery of initiatives through effective stakeholder liaison with partner organizations and through direct line management of the CATO team
  • Portfolio Oversight: Work collaboratively with the CATO Director and senior colleagues to oversee a comprehensive portfolio of training activities
  • Clinical Research Enhancement: Drive initiatives to enhance the clinical researcher experience and increase the number of clinicians engaging in clinical academic activities
  • Quality Assurance: Lead quality assurance processes for all CATO activities and funded fellowship schemes
  • Programme Improvement: Identify and develop opportunities to improve the clinical academic training experience at Imperial College AHSC
  • Programme Delivery: Take responsibility for the delivery of existing CATO programmes, including fellowship oversight, educational event development, creation of research materials, and resource management
  • Data Analysis: Conduct data analysis for funding bids and provide formal reports to funders and AHSC partners
  • Cross-Organizational Leadership: Drive forward cross-organizational opportunities using influence, personal drive, and project management expertise
  • Relationship Building: Establish effective working relationships with staff across the AHSC, including university researchers, educators, clinicians, and NHS senior managers
  • Team Management: Manage the day-to-day operations of the CATO team and lead annual planning activities

Clinical Academic Training Qualifications & Skills Required

  • Comprehensive knowledge of clinical academic training pathways
  • Strong understanding of NHS and/or university research environments

  • Knowledge of national clinical academic training pathways from NIHR and other funders
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Imperial College Healthcare Job Structure

The Head of CATO Programmes will lead the CATO team while working closely with and reporting to the CATO Director and the Head of the AHSC Directorate, which is situated within the Faculty of Medicine. This role offers significant autonomy while maintaining strategic alignment with organizational priorities.
