Job Description Summary

The Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join their Centre for Natural Material Innovation (CNMI). The role-holder will contribute to the Horizon Europe funded research project, ‘UPWEARS: Sustainable solutions for upgraded smart wearables and equipment in sport’.

Responsibilities

  • Define specifications for biomimetic designs for e-textiles, focusing on properties such as breathability, shock absorbance, and bioluminescence
  • Benchmark function-structure-property relations in natural materials, structures, and systems as models for mimicry
  • Utilize multi-scale characterization techniques to examine selected natural systems and classify mechanisms for desired functionalities
  • Contribute to the translation of desired mechanisms, behaviors, and functionalities into processes, designs, and prototypes
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues at INRAE (French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment) and participate in short-term research visits to INRAE in Nantes
  • Potentially supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in related research projects
