Lancaster University Students’ Union seeks a dynamic Head of Commercial Services to oversee core service areas including retail, events, and student living. This role demands a strategic thinker with a proven track record in commercial management to drive profitability while maintaining a strong focus on student satisfaction.

Responsibilities

🏪 Commercial Services Management

• Oversee and optimize the performance of SU outlets and income-generating services
• Collaborate with suppliers to manage and expand product and service offerings
• Implement and monitor quality standards, customer care protocols, and operational procedures
• Ensure adequate staff training and maintain high standards across all commercial areas
• Work closely with the marketing team to promote and develop Commercial Services
• Conduct regular market research to understand customer preferences and adjust offerings accordingly

💡 Business Development

• Identify and develop new business opportunities to enhance student services and generate income
• Stay informed about industry trends in Licensed Trade, Retail, and student housing sectors
• Propose and implement new products, activities, and ventures to boost sales and profits
• Seek external funding opportunities and maintain awareness of potential funders
• Create comprehensive business and operational plans for new initiatives

📊 Financial Management and Planning

• Monitor and report on the financial performance of Commercial Services
• Develop action plans to address budget variances and performance issues
• Analyze EPOS system reports to optimize outlet performance
• Maintain financial controls in accordance with SU procedures
• Produce annual budgets and set key performance indicators for all commercial areas
• Develop and implement a strategic commercial plan in collaboration with the CEO

👥 Staff Management

• Provide leadership, direction, and support to direct reports
• Conduct regular performance reviews and annual appraisals
• Identify and address individual training needs within the team
• Foster a culture of learning and development among staff members

🛡️ Health and Safety

• Take overall responsibility for health and safety in Commercial Services areas
• Ensure compliance with the Union’s Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation
• Guide the management team in implementing safe working practices
• Create a safe and healthy working environment throughout the Union

📜 Students’ Union Policies and Standards

• Ensure adherence to Union governance processes and policies
• Lead initiatives in safeguarding, data protection, risk management, equality, diversity, and inclusion
• Champion sustainability practices across all commercial services
• Ensure compliance with legal requirements including licensing, CCTV, HMO, GDPR, and food safety regulations
