Job Description Summary

The University of Southampton is seeking a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to work collaboratively with disabled students, providing essential academic support as directed by the Student Disability and Inclusive Support Coordinator team. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on students’ educational experiences while working in a dynamic and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive notetaking services, attending classes (in-person or online) and creating summarized notes for students
  • Offer support in laboratory, workshop, and clinical skills sessions, assisting with equipment setup, instrument reading, and documentation
  • Act as a Study Assistant, helping students adapt to the academic demands of Higher Education, including support with private study, focus, motivation, and organization
  • Deliver practical support such as serving as a sighted guide, assisting with library usage, initial orientation, reading academic materials aloud, and transcribing handwritten notes or recorded material
  • Provide exam support, including reading exam papers aloud, writing/typing students’ dictated answers, and offering prompts during exams or time-constrained assessments
  • Collaborate with the Student Disability and Inclusive Support Coordinator team to tailor support for individual student needs
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and adhere to appropriate boundaries while working with students
  • Participate in training, performance reviews, and service improvement activities as required
  • Familiarize oneself with the University’s geography, services, and academic timetabling relevant to assigned work
  • Develop an understanding of subject-specific language to effectively carry out the role
