Job Description Summary

The University of Nottingham is seeking an experienced and dedicated Assistant Farm Manager for their Centre for Dairy Science Innovation (CDSI). This role offers a unique opportunity to lead cutting-edge dairy research while ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Herd Management: Oversee the welfare of all cow groups, monitor behaviors, and implement appropriate medical treatments when necessary.
  • Facility Maintenance: Maintain high standards of hygiene in yards, sheds, robots, and the farm surgery. Implement and communicate process improvements to staff.
  • Data Management: Prioritize and analyze live data, make informed decisions, and communicate these to the team.
  • Feed Management: Manage clamp operations, including contractor supervision and quality assessment during feed preparation.
  • Equipment Oversight: Manage a diverse fleet of machinery, including telehandlers, tractors, robot milkers, and automated cleaning systems. Ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Contractor Management: Coordinate with agricultural contractors, overseeing work techniques, timelines, and adherence to biosecurity measures.
  • Facility Operations: Manage various specialists to keep the facility operational 24/7, balancing timeliness, welfare concerns, staffing levels, and repair costs.
  • Calving Management: Oversee the birthing process and initial calf management, making critical decisions based on urgency and safety factors.
  • Nutrition Planning: Collaborate with industry specialists to calculate nutritional requirements, formulate rations, and manage feed delivery using specialized equipment.
