Job Description Summary

Imperial College London is seeking a highly skilled Research Associate (Post-Doctoral) to join their Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department for a fixed-term contract of up to 28 months. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in developing methodologies for analyzing the stability of power systems with high penetration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) and tracing the root causes of observed oscillations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a methodology for analyzing the stability of power systems with high penetration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) and with incomplete knowledge about the system model
  • Develop a methodology to trace the root-causes of observed oscillations in power systems
  • Conduct data analysis and maintain accurate records of all findings
  • Write reports for submission to research sponsors and academic journals
  • Attend relevant workshops, conferences, and project meetings with UK and global partners
  • Collaborate with researchers, academics, and industry professionals within Imperial College and external organizations
  • Assist in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research students and research assistants
  • Comply with College safety practices and attend relevant training courses

Requirements and Qualifications

  • PhD in Physical Sciences, preferably Electrical Engineering, Control, Physics, or Mathematics
  • Doctoral research or equivalent research, industrial, or commercial experience in control applied to distributed or inverter-based resources (desirable)
  • High level of mathematical skills and knowledge
  • Knowledge of computer languages such as Python, PyOMO, Julia, GAMS, and specialized tools like PSSE, PLSF, DigSilent, PSCAD, Plexos, SPINE
  • Ability to conduct detailed literature reviews and develop new concepts
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for publications and presentations
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to direct and motivate a small research team
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and be open-minded and cooperative
  • Flexibility to work outside normal hours and travel for research and conferences
