Job Description Summary

The University of Leeds is seeking a skilled and proactive Mechanical & Manufacturing Technician to join the technical team within the Faculty of Biological Sciences. This role involves providing manufacturing support for biomedical research laboratories, machining designs to close tolerances, and maintaining fabrication equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Machine components using conventional machine tools such as turning, milling, drilling, and polishing machines
  • Create 3D models using SolidWorks or equivalent software based on 2D sketches
  • Collaborate with academics and researchers on manufacturing best practices and design improvements
  • Maintain accurate records of work, including clear designs for research groups
  • Interpret sketches and drawings to manufacture or build equipment
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety protocols, risk assessments, and COSHH regulations
  • Share best practices and service improvement ideas with the technicians’ network
  • Maintain, service, and ensure the operational readiness of equipment
  • Liaise with material and tooling suppliers for cost estimates
  • Stay updated on advancements in manufacturing, tooling, and materials for 3D design and modeling
  • Provide flexible technical support and training to research staff based on their needs
